There are numerous reasons why someone might need to relocate for a week, a month, or a year. Maybe a company is transferring an employee to a new city, or a family is looking for somewhere to stay while long-term renovations occur at their home. Whatever the circumstances, temporary furnished housing offers flexibility, affordability, and quality needed to make stays as comfortable as possible. Furnished housing provides a level of ease and convenience that hotels and homestays lack – but what is the difference between corporate housing and furnished housing? Corporate housing and furnished housing are two different types of accommodations. While both provide comfortable lodging for individuals and businesses, each comes with different rules and style approaches across the board.

The Ins and Outs of Corporate Housing

Corporate housing is a term in the travel industry meaning renting out a furnished apartment, condo, or house temporarily to individuals, military personnel, or corporations as an alternative to a traditional hotel or an extended hotel stay. Corporate housing typically offers more extensive square footage, costs less, offers complete customer service, and is used for stays averaging one month or more. The home will include linens, housewares, a fully stocked kitchen, laundry services, and utilities such as cable and internet. These guests have higher service demands that require specific care and attention from landlords or property managers. Rules and standard operating practices are more stringent in corporate housing than in furnished housing.

What About Furnished Housing?

Unlike corporate housing, there are no “standardized” or “industry acceptable” rules for furnished housing. On the other hand, Furnished housing is simply an umbrella term that means something obvious: the rental has furniture. This type of housing is typically rented by the week or month and offers many benefits. It can also be a property that is rented for a night, week, month, or even year. That said, it is important to understand what to expect with furnished housing. Below we have compiled a list of what should be included in a furnished housing space:

  • Living room furniture: Couches, dining/coffee tables, and desks often come in furnished housing
  • Bedroom furniture: You can expect beds, dressers, nightstands, and closet storage in furnished housing rentals. Pro Tip: Call ahead to inquire about the bed size if you plan to bring your own sheets!
  • Electronics and entertainment: Most furnished housing options come equipped with a telephone and television, with the cost of cable and phone services included in your monthly rent. If your rental is from the 1990s, it might even include fax and answering machines!
  • Kitchen: Kitchen basics will always be available. From appliances such as an oven, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster to cookware, dish towels, and utensils – furnished housing has you covered in the kitchen
  • Laundry: There should also be laundry essentials, such as an iron and iron board, and in some cases, washers and dryers as well. Pro Tip: Bring your own laundry detergent!
  • Additional services: Accommodations vary, so it is worth asking for details from your furnished housing provider
