Top 5 Things to do in Del Rio, Texas

Del Rio, Texas has a population of 36,513 with a median income of $41,065.00 per household per year. Home of the Laughlin Air Force Base, a United States Air Force facility, this charming town of hardworking people enjoys having fun. So, what is there to do in Del Rio? We’re glad you asked! It’s essential to get started with the basics.

  • Hike the Rio Grande and Canyon Rim Trail System. One of the best places for a scenic hike is Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site. This Texas Parks destination has around 10 miles of trails to explore. Visitors to the path can enjoy hiking and biking along the rim next to the Rio Grande and often camp at one of the forty-six different campsites. Ancient rock art and ranger-led programs take visitors to the Fate Bell Shelter, Presa canyons, and upper canyons. There is also a shorter ADA-accessible trail with a bird viewing area that is great for kids.
  • Explore Kickapoo Caverns State Park. In less than an hour’s drive, explorers can reach Kickapoo Caverns State Park complete with caves and trails to get lost. The entrance to the cave is prohibited without hired guides, so even the locals go the extra mile to see this exciting site. The State Park offers weekly tours on Saturdays, but it’s essential to know that tours involve a moderately strenuous hike. Once complete, make sure to go the extra mile and hike on the Armadillo Lookout Trail to see panoramic views of the park.
  • Kayak at Amistad National Recreation Area. Amistad National Recreation Area is a great place to get out on the water on a kayak or paddleboard. From the water, adventurers can see steep canyons and wide-open water. Additional activities while here are swimming, viewing ancient rock art, hiking the Diablo East area, birdwatching, and primitive campfires.
  • Sample Wine at the Oldest Winery in Texas. Dating back to 1883, Val Verde Winery is the oldest winery in Texas. Visitors can enjoy a winery tour while learning about the four generations of winemakers who have kept Del Rio on the winemaking map. Val Verde also offers a wine club for members, tasting rooms, and beautiful views.
  • Enjoy delicious Mexican Food. Being so close to the Mexican border, it’s no surprise that Del Rio is home to excellent and authentic Mexican food. Diners can patronize local food trucks for tacos or visit one of the town’s many restaurants to sample the local fare. Our recommendation? Check out El Palenque Restaurant or Chinto’s!
